Baseball Needs Major Change Like This One to Revive Interest in Its All-Star Game
As has been the case for the past decade, all but the most die-hard baseball fans have forgotten about last month’s All-Star Game. Few people outside of Cincinnati may remember that Todd Frazier won the Home Run Derby, and only a handful of fans of competing teams can easily recall that Mike Trout was the game’s MVP.
The waning interest in the Midsummer Classic will soon reduce the game to the indifference it now faces with the National Football League’s Pro Bowl. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred must work with owners and the players’ association to enact changes that will revive interest in the once-anticipated All-Star Game.
The league winning home field advantage in the World Series didn’t make the game more meaningful for the fans. There is also the recent change to exclusive online voting, a decision that disempowered fans dedicated enough to attend home games.
What the All-Star Game needs is a more radical change that will give fans more interest in the game while making it more fun for the coaches and players themselves. Here is a proposal that accomplishes both of these goals.
First of all, get rid of the outdated concept of the American League and the National League. Instead, pick a team selected by the fans and go with a team selected by the players and coaches.
The fan base will consist of the top two vote-getters at each position, with six outfielders, five starting pitchers and five relievers. This arrangement will provide 26 players for the fans’ team, which will be managed by the home team’s captain. Assuming the change goes into effect next year, Washington’s Matt Williams will manage the team.
For example, on the Fan List from 2015, the top two vote-getters were Salvador Perez and Buster Posey. First base will be the tandem of Miguel Cabrera and Paul Goldschmidt, while second base will be manned by Kolten Wong and Jose Altuve (for starters Dee Gordon and Omar Infante were injured during the game).
Shortstop actually includes two American League players, as both Alcides Escobar and Julio Iglesias received more votes than St. Louis’ Johnny Perralta. The same will happen at third base if Josh Donaldson and Mike Mutsakas both receive more votes than Cincinnati’s Todd Frazier.
The Fan Defenders will be the top six vote-getters, including Mike Trout, Lorenzo Cain, Alex Gordon, Jose Bautista, Yoenis Cespedes and Bryce Harper. (Matt Holliday and Giancarlo Stanton were both injured in the middle of the game). Nelson Cruz and Kendrys Morales will serve as designated hitters.
Unlike before, fans have to vote for starting pitchers and relievers. The 2015 pitching staff, based on popularity and fame, includes starters Clayton Kershaw, Madison Bumgarner, Zach Greinik, Johnny Cueto and David Price.
Aroldis Chapman, Craig Kimbrel, Greg Holland, Jonathan Papelbon and Street Houston fill out the bullpen.
The alternate team is selected by the managers and peers from among all players not on the fan team. This team is managed by World Series skippers, one in charge of offense and one in charge of pitching.
Plenty of big players could fill this roster, which includes catcher Yadier Molina, first basemen Anthony Rizzo, Joey Votto, Jose Abreu or Mark Tequiera, and second basemen Robinson Cano and Brian Dozer. Among the available shortstops will be Troy Tulowitzki and Xander Boegaerts, while third could have viable options like Nolan Arenado, Justin Turner and Adrian Beltre or Frazier.
Defenders outside of the coaching/playing team could include Carlos Gonzalez, Carlos Gomez, AJ Pollack, JD Martinez, Jason Heyward and Hunter Pence. DH can be chosen from players like Edwin Encarnacion, Albert Pujols and Alex Rodriguez.
For their personnel, this team could choose shooters such as Max Scherzer, Jake Arrieta, Jon Lester, Chris Sale, John Lackey and Michael Wacha. Options for the bullpen include top relievers such as Glenn Perkins, Mark Melancon, Trevor Rosenthal, Jerrys Familia and Santiago Casilla.
As you can see from these two lists, both teams are loaded with talented players. Of course, fans will enjoy the luxury of selecting their favorite players, but opponents have the luxury of first-hand knowledge of the game. All in all, it will make for an interesting race. MLB can reward fans if their team wins by giving away a free button or cheap item to anyone who attends the first home game after the All-Star break.
