The Liberian National Soccer Team And The Under-23 Lost Vital Games

Until the necessary programs are put in place and politics and personal interests are removed from the game of football, those who control football and the national football teams will continue to disgrace Liberia.

The Football Association of Liberia provides avenues for the whipping of our various national teams. Over the weekend, the junior and under-23 national teams suffered heavy defeats in two international football tournaments.

Senior Stars lost 2-4 to Cape Verde in an African Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday, March 26. Another disgrace for Liberian football was on Sunday, March 27, when the under-23 team suffered a humiliating defeat at home. Ivory Coast’s Under-23 legs in Accra at the London 2012 Olympic Qualifiers.

Liberia was defeated by the Ivorians with a score of 0:4. The country scored a total of eight goals in two international matches in two days. Such a grim picture of football for Liberia can only be attributed to the incompetence of the current administration of the Liberia Football Association or LFA led by Moses Bility.

Our football authorities failed to plan and prepare because they had nothing to prepare for, so as a nation they had nothing on Saturday 26th March and Sunday 27th March 2011 in Cape Verde and Ghana.

The road to London 2012 has seen plenty of setbacks for Liberia before the final against Cote d’Ivoire after full time.

Lone Star Under 23’s first setback came during the knockout between Jubilee FC and Nimba FC when Nimba FC’s Sam Johnson was injured in a clash with a Jubilee FC defender.

The action ruled the under-23 striker out of the Lone Star youth team’s game in Ghana against Ivory Coast on Sunday (March 27). The second setback for the Lone Star Under-23 team came when Israeli winger Patrick Doepla died in Monrovia on Tuesday morning after arriving in Liberia for a day-long training session with the team ahead of their trip to Ghana. Lone Star Under-23 was pleased with the arrival of Liberian U-20 forward Alex Nimoh in place of the departed Patrick Doepla.

The team landed in Ghana on Thursday, they were informed that Nimo will not play in Liberia until he receives the correct document. The team remained in the hands of Sekou Jabate, he did his best but they still lost.

The Liberian Football Association has confirmed the death scene of Patrick Doepla, the Israeli-based Liberian striker who met his untimely death on Tuesday morning.

LFA in a statement issued on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, said the player died at his girlfriend’s home on Old Road, on the outskirts of Monrovia, and not in a hotel room as previously reported.

A medical report citing Dr. Brisbane said Patrick died on Tuesday morning, March 22, 2011, on arrival at JFK Medical Center in Monrovia, where he was taken by friends.

According to the LFA: “He spent the night of March 21 at his fiancee’s house in Old Road, hours after arriving in the country from Israel to form part of the U-23 national squad for Ghana to play Ivory Coast fight. Beach on Sunday.”

Football House says the government has launched an investigation into Patrick Doepla’s death. The LFA says it is also sponsoring a full autopsy on the player’s remains to determine the cause of his death.

According to a statement signed by LFA spokesman Henry Flomo, LFA wishes the player’s family to seek the comfort of God Almighty during their bereavement. Football House says Doepla’s loss is huge for the country’s plan to improve the potential of young players.

Meanwhile, LFA will open the book of condolence by 12:00 noon on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium in Monrovia; a big press conference will be held before it.

All football fans, officials, media and LFA members are expected to attend. Liberian leader and patron of sports Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf presented the Liberian national football teams with a US$20,000 LFA grant.

The president also wished the national team victory in their trip to Ivory Coast and Cape Verde. On Wednesday, LFA president Musa Biliti said that the House of Football is grateful to the president for this move. He said that this amount will help raise the morale of the players.
