Is Tom Brady REALLY the MVP So Far?
I know, I know. I must be crazy to even ask the question. How can a guy who not only obliterates the single season TD mark, but also goes undefeated, not be MVP? Only someone with a grudge against the guy could think otherwise. One has to be a die-hard Ohio State Buckeyes fan, or hate QBs that appear in GQ magazines, or hate every player who wears a Darth Hoodie to even imagine that Tom Brady deserves No MVP.
Well, I’m standing here today (well, really sitting here) as someone who is none of the above three. I like the Wolverines and have no grudges against the GQ club or whoever plays for the obnoxious presence that is Bill Belichick. So, now that we’re on the same page, let me explain to you why Tom Brady is still not the NFL MVP this season.
Yes, Tom Brady will be statistically the best player not just this season, but possibly ever. Yes, he’ll finish the season at least 14-2, with a chance to go perfect. But do those two things mean he should be MVP? This type of controversy comes up every year in baseball. Does having the craziest stats imaginable mean you are the MOST VALUABLE player in your entire sport? A-Rod just won the American League MVP. Was it just because he put numbers like Mantis and Ruth? No. That was because he single-handedly led the Yankees to the playoffs. Take away A-Rod and the Yankees won’t make the playoffs.
So that brings me back to my point. I say boldly. At this point in the NFL season, which has nearly completed Week 12, Brett Favre is the NFL MVP. Just to endure more sarcasm, let’s look at a brief side-by-side statistical comparison.
Passing: Brady-39, Favre-22.
Yards: Brady-3,439, Favre-3,356.
Interceptions: Brady-4 (are you kidding me?), Favre-8
Rating of passengers: Brady-127.9, Favre-101.5
Why, after this embarrassingly close statistical comparison, and knowing that Tom Brady will likely be the quarterback that leads his team to a perfect season, do I think old man Brett Favre is the MVP? Thanks for asking. I’ll tell you why. Let’s look at some important factors that should not be overlooked. We start simple. Tom Brady really has a team around him. Brett Favre has players around him. Brady has a team, and a hell of a team on that note. He owns the most talented receiver in the NFL after the quietest steal in NFL history from a business perspective. His secondary receiver could be #1 on many teams. Wes Welker, #3, could be #1 or #2 on many teams. The Maroney-Morris tandem, while nothing short of spectacular lately, has provided solid play. Add that to the fact that Brady is protected by the damn Great Wall of China with his offensive line and you have all the pieces for success. I’m not discounting his success. He is an amazing defender. But remember, he is playing for an amazing team. He is a product of his own talent, but also the incredible talent around him.
Brett Favre, on the other hand, is a product of nothing more than himself. Please name me 4 starters in the Packers offense not named Brett Favre or Donald Driver. You can read about the Patriots wide receiver trio, their tight ends, running backs and more. Brett Favre is almost there playing by himself. He’s making a star in a kid named Greg Jennings, and until the last few weeks, he had the equivalent of a high school running back behind him. Despite all of that, despite the lack of talent around him, despite the lack of running game around him until the recent emergence of Ryan Grant, you have an old quarterback who is doing absolutely phenomenal things.
And now for the second reason why Brett Favre and NOT Tom Brady is currently the MVP. Considering the Patriots are the best team in the NFL and add to that the fact that their schedule isn’t accurate, let’s just say it’s not scary. Let me know if this line-up of competitors sounds scary to you. Buffalo Bills (twice), New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals. Anyone else still shivering? I did not think so. The only real defense they’ve played this season has been Indy and SHAWOB San Diego (although they haven’t been able to defend anyone lately). The Packers, on the other hand, have played these teams: Eagles, Giants, Chargers, Vikings (twice), Bears, @Denver, @Kansas City and Carolina. I mentioned this in a previous post, but I don’t believe anyone in the league has a tougher schedule than the defense. And yet, Brett Favre almost single-handedly led his team to a 9-1 record.
Add all these factors together and it means one thing; MVP. Most valuable player. Brett Favre, in terms of value to his team, is the best player in the National Football League right now. Let the hate mail and comments continue.
