Crazy Ray – The Biggest Dallas Cowboys Fan of All-Time Passes
The Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League are a much-loved team in Texas and beyond. For more than forty years, this team performed at a high level and pleased its fans. In addition to its great success on the field, America’s Team has also been successful off the field and is considered one of the most valuable sports teams in North America. Behind every major sports franchise are fans who support the team no matter what. The Dallas Cowboys have had countless fans cheering them on for the past four decades, not to mention the world famous Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders and team mascot Rowdy. However, among all those who support Cowboy football, one fan stands alone. It is a fan of the late Wilford “Crazy Ray” Jones.
Tragically, on March 17, 2007 in Dallas, Texas, the voice of entertainer Wilford Jones was silenced for the last time after enduring a decade of ill health, including diabetes and heart failure. He was 76 years old. Known as the original and unofficial mascot of the Dallas Cowboys, Crazy Ray has delighted generations of Cowboys fans. Over the years, he has become a lone star as the iconic symbol of Cowboys football as the logo of the Dallas Cowboys. Countless fans, motivated by Crazy Ray’s passion for their team, proudly wear Dallas Cowboys jerseys to show off their true colors as well.
Crazy Ray attended the first home game of the new Dallas Cowboys franchise in 1960. His real involvement with the team began in 1962 when he began selling pennants at Cowboys home games. Dressed in western clothing, with clappers, a six-shooter in a holster, a camera and a cowboy hat, he entertained fans from the sidelines with magic tricks, riding a hobby horse and other activities. His trademark whistle, a high-pitched whistle, was also well-known, earning him the nickname “Rai the Whistle”.
Crazy Ray is said to have missed just three Cowboys home games in the team’s forty-seven years of existence. Indeed, Crazy Ray is such an integral part of Dallas Cowboys history that he has pride of place in the fan section of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Although Crazy Ray never officially worked for the Cowboys franchise, he was given a special parking pass and unlimited access to Texas Stadium for all home games.
Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys team, expressed his condolences to the family, “This is a sad day for everyone who follows the Dallas Cowboys. Ray was selfless, entertaining and the most passionate Cowboys fan. Thousands of lives and generations of football fans. He was a part will continue to be important to the team’s legacy and family.”
Wilford “Crazy Ray” Jones was one of those people who would come back every now and then. He dedicated his life to his team and touched the lives of countless Cowboys fans and football fans around the world. He will always be remembered for his spirit and love of the game. There is no doubt that Crazy Ray’s memory will live on in the hearts of Dallas football fans and fans everywhere, as well as the Dallas Cowboys franchise.
