US Presidents Sites – Visiting the William McKinley Presidential Museum in Canton, Ohio

The McKinley Presidential Library and Museum is unlike any other presidential museum. Originally intended only as the final resting place of our 25th president, it has effectively reinvented itself as a museum campus. The site appeals not only to those interested in McKinley and presidential history, but also to students of other academic disciplines.

Located near Interstate 77 in Canton, Ohio, the towering monument can be seen for miles. McKinley was tragically killed in September 1901 and was laid to rest in a temporary grave until a suitable memorial could be planned and built. Six years later, the McKinley Memorial was dedicated and the president and his family were buried there.

Today, fitness enthusiasts walk or run up the 108 steps that lead to the monument’s entrance, and it’s a popular meeting place for school groups, continuing education classes and visitors. On site, visitors will find an active planetarium, exhibition space for McKinley memorabilia, and periodic exhibits focusing on various aspects of American history.

One of the most popular attractions is Shop Street, which is a museum-like exhibition of shops circa 1900. Various artefacts from that period are on display such as fire trucks and vehicles used in that period. There is also a museum shop on site with a wide variety of items for all levels of interest.

The site is open daily and there is a nominal entry fee. Visitors should allow about an hour to see all the different exhibits, which rotate frequently and often include items from the Smithsonian and other presidential museums.

While McKinley and his family once owned a home in Canton and intended to return after his second term as president, the home was not preserved and no longer exists. His wife’s home, also in Canton, is now the First Lady’s Library, dedicated to America’s first ladies. This is the building where the McKinley family lived when the future president and his wife were married.

Canton is also known for several popular local restaurants downtown, any of which make a perfect stop for lunch or dinner. The city is perhaps best known for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which is a short five-minute drive from the McKinley Memorial Museum.

If you’re traveling to or from Cleveland, we recommend a stop in Canton. For sports fans, the Football Hall of Fame is a must, while anyone with even a passing interest in history will enjoy visiting the McKinley Museum campus.
